Letters to the Editor
Sir, The Congress Party's decision to field the former Chief Election Commissioner, M.S. Gill, for the Rajya Sabha election from Punjab, is most unwelcome. Though the BJP is no angel in this regard, its criticism of post-retirement inducements for Election Commissioners who have to directly deal with political parties appears valid. Those who have held top constitutional post should not "aspire" for positions after retirement. V.N. Gopal, Chennai * * * Sir, There is no logic in the BJP's objection to the Congress nominating Mr. Gill to the Rajya Sabha, simply because he has held a constitutional post. There is no rule against it. In fact, such retired officials should come forward to take up political positions as only then will there be reform of the system. With the experience at his disposal, Mr. Gill can definitely contribute to the polity. V.S. Jayaraman, Chennai * * * Sir, The stand of Mr. Gill that after retirement he is only an ordinary citizen is not acceptable. This should be prohibited by law. M.K.B. Nambiar Mahe
* * * Sir, The BJP objecting to Mr. Gill's nomination is unfair. The Congress and the BJP are habitual offenders in choosing retired persons from the civil services and the armed forces as Rajya Sabha members and Governors. R. Janakiraman, Cheyyar, T.N.
