Our Staff Reporter

TIRUPATI, MARCH 17. The Intermediate Board examinations began here today for junior Inter students. Senior Intermediate exams will begin on Thursday.

Of the 42,621 candidates who were to take the exam in Chittoor district, only 40,636 appeared with 1,985 abstaining.

The District Education Committee formed to oversee the smooth conduct of the exams inspected 26 centres in the district and debarred ten candidates from writing the exams for allegedly indulging in malpractice.

While two candidates each were debarred at the Government junior colleges in Piler and Karvetinagaram, one each were debarred at the Government junior colleges in Chavatagunta and Thottambadu; B.S. Kannan Junior College, Chittoor; S.V. Junior College, Mittoor; B.C.N. College, Nagari and Harinatha Reddy Junior College, Tirupati.

Candidates had to put up with various irritants as some colleges failed to provide the furniture, eventually forcing the candidates to squat on the floor and take the exam, and some others had only asbestos sheets to protect the students from the scorching sun.

Nellore: The Intermediate and Class X examinations were conducted amidst tight security and went off uneventfully except for some commotion at D.K.W. College in Nellore where students and parents argued against the closing of the main door.

Meanwhile, the DEC convenor, A. Narasimha Raju, has said four cases of malpractices were reported -- two in Bitragunta and one each at Kulluru and Haranathapuram (Nellore town) -- in the district. The District Education Officer, T. Lakshmi Rajyam, informed that a single instance of malpractice has been reported at Atmakur, with respect to the Class X exam.

Anantapur: Eighteen Intermediate first year students were booked for copying in different examinations centres in the district on the first day of Intermediate examination today. No tenth class student was booked for malpractice on the first day of SSC examination.
