Sukul upsets Mathew

KOLKATA, MARCH 17. Second seeded Jaco T. Mathew was upset by local challenger Saurav Sukul in straight sets while the other seeds in the men's singles cruised into the next round of the Central Excise Open grass court tennis, here on Wednesday.

Top seeded Kamala Kannan and third seeded V.M. Ranjeet recorded straight set wins in their respective matches and were joined by fifth seeded Anjan Viplab and sixth seeded Manoj Mahadevan, into the quarterfinals.

In the women's singles, fancied players enjoyed facile wins as top seeded Sheetal Gautam, second seeded Ragini Vimal and fourth seeded Sandra Sashidharan progressed to the quarterfinals with comfotable wins.

Important results: Men's singles (pre-quarterfinals): Kamala Kannan bt S. Chaudhury 6-4, 6-2; Anjan Viplab bt H. Upendran 6-3, 6-4; V.M. Ranjeet bt Jitin Bishnoi 6-1, 7-6(3); R. Narendran bt R. Chitlangia 6-4, 2-6, 7-6(0); Ashutosh Singh bt Gursharan Singh 6-3, 6-3; Manoj Mahadevan bt Suresh Kumar 6-1, 6-1; Saurav Sukul bt Jaco T. Mathew 6-3, 6-1.

Women's singles (pre-quarterfinals): Sheetal Gautam bt Shivika Burman 6-4, 6-4, S. Sashidharan bt S. Jalali 6-1, 6-2; Jilke Nelord bt Shilpi Jaiswal 7-6(5), 2-6, 6-4; Ragini Vimal bt S. Banerjee 6-0, 6-2.
