BHOPAL, MARCH 17. A noted musician and three others of his family have been arrested here for allegedly demanding dowry for his son, according to the police. Annoyed over the alleged demand for Rs 5 lakh as dowry at the last minute, the girl, Poorti, refused to marry Atul, son of L.K. Pandit, a renowned musician of Gwalior gharana. Following a complaint by Poorti's father, Pandit, his wife Abha, daughter Meeta and Atul were taken into custody and a case registered against them under the Dowry Act yesterday, the Superintendent of Police, Dharamveer Singh Yadav, said today. Poorti's father Shankar Lal, in his complaint, alleged that her daughter's inter-caste marriage was fixed with Atul, a Chartered Accountant working with a Moscow-based firm in Delhi. The complaint alleged that soon after the arrival of `baraat' in Bhopal yesterday morning, the groom's father demanded a dowry of Rs 5 lakh but the bride's family objected to this. When the demand was not met, Pandit reportedly rang up Mr. Shankar Lal and said Atul had left for airport to catch a flight to New Delhi. Though the bride's relatives rushed to the airport and brought Atul back, Poorti refused to marry him and her father lodged a report at the Maharana Pratap Nagar police station. Acting on the complaint, police arrested the four, who are to be produced before a court here soon. Meanwhile, Atul, who hails from a family of renowned musicians of Gwalior gharana, denied the dowry charge saying his monthly salary is of the order of Rs 3 lakh and there is no reason to demand Rs 5 lakh as dowry.
