Educational kit on waste management

By Our Staff Reporter

NEW DELHI, MARCH 17. In a bid to educate the masses about management of bio-medical waste, the Centre for Environment Education (CEE) released a national kit of educational material on bio-medical waste management during a national workshop held on the issue in the Capital today.

Containing video spots, theatre slides, audio skit and audio spot, the kit that has been developed with support from the World Health Organisation, aims to educate people about management of bio-medical waste. The kit also includes a number of posters that have been developed by CEE which depict the correct method for disposing the various types of bio-medical waste and also inform the public about the harmful effects of the same.

"In the Bio-Medical Waste Handling and Management Rules 1998, about 10 categories of waste have been identified by the Ministry. And corresponding to the type of waste, the method of disposal has been identified. But that is a very confusing and complicated list. So instead, we have organised the various categories according to the common treatment in the posters. We have also tried to speak about individual issues like management of sharps, management of bio-medical plastics and management of spillage,'' said co-ordinator, CEE Delhi, Shyamala K. Mani. While the organisation will distribute the kits among various medical institutions, they are also planning to air the audio clips on radio channels, starting this Thursday.

The two-day national workshop on "Bio-Medical Waste Management-Status Analysis and Planning'' inaugurated today aimed at discussing the various recommendations and action plans suggested during the five regional workshops and to develop a framework for the policy formulation and amendments to the rules.
