The secret of success for students is to start preparations early, particularly for competitive examinations. They must develop the habit of reading books, which are always one's best friends and help to develop language and knowledge, V. Iraianbu, Commissioner for Disciplinary Proceedings, told students at the fifth `annual day' celebrations of the Madurai Sivakasi Nadars Pioneer Meenakshi Women's College, Poovanthi, on March 11. He said South Indian students started preparations for IAS examinations only after graduation whereas those in the north began from school. The Principal, K. V. Kokila, presented the annual report.
A one-day State-level workshop on `developing skills for librarians in digital era' was conducted by the Yadava College and the Society for Advancement of Library and Information Science. Exactly 99 librarians of universities, engineering colleges, arts and science colleges, polytechnics and special institutions took part in the workshop. G. Thiruvasagam, Principal, stressed the need for technological updating of library science. A. Hariharan, Technical Officer, Structural Engineering Research Centre, Chennai, spoke about digitalisation of college libraries. The college also conducted a one-day workshop on `Reporting skills' on March 1 for students aspiring to become journalists. More than 120 students from 10 colleges of the Madurai Kamaraj University took part in the workshop to hone their skills in reporting. Ilasai Sundaram, Station Director, All India Radio, outlined the basic requirements for a successful reporter fluency in spoken language; proficiency in English and creative writing.
Students of the Department of Management Studies of the Madurai Kamaraj University participated in a national-level management meet Syayambaz'04 organised by the Annamalai University at Chidambaram, from March 1 to 3, and won the overall championship along with the rolling shield and citation. They took part in business quiz, paper presentation and IT event and bagged prizes for them. The winning team was congratulated by the Vice-Chancellor, P. K. Ponnuswamy.
The International Women's Day was celebrated at the M. S. S. Wakf Board College, conducting a seminar on `women at the crossroads' on March 11. Caroline Rajasekar, Head, Department of Social Science, Lady Doak College, highlighted the various problems encountered by women in general and employed women in particular. A group discussion was organised along with competitions. The celebration was held under the auspices of four units of the NSS.
The Department of Information Technology of the P. K. N. Arts and Science College, Tirumangalam, conducted an inter-collegiate competition, `Itech Brainz'04', on March 4. A total of 150 students from 16 colleges participated in the festival, which was inaugurated by R. Prabhu Ram, Managing Director, Ramar Technologies. The event had participants from Dindigul, Theni, Virudhunagar and Madurai districts. The Lady Doak College, Madurai, won the rolling trophy.
