Metro services affected

By Our Staff Reporter

NEW DELHI, MARCH 17. The Metro train service between Shahdara and Welcome stations was affected today as a train developed some technical snag at the track-changing point beyond the Shahdara station. As a result operation of to-and-fro service between the two stations was restricted to just one of the two tracks.

The problem surfaced in the afternoon when a train reached the Shahdara station. As soon as the people go off and the train moved forward for changing tracks, it ran into a technical fault at the "point'' or the scissors crossing.

Scotching rumours of any "derailment'', the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation spokesperson, Anuj Dayal, said the technical fault took place in a non-passenger area and did not affect any person in any way. Stating that thereafter the operation of service between Shahdara and Welcome station was restricted to just one of the tracks, he maintained that trains ran as per the schedule and there was no delay whatsoever.

As for the repairing of the system, the official noted that as the maintenance work is primarily carried on at night, it was decided to keep the affected area clear of operations for the rest of the day.

Incidentally, this is the fourth time that Metro operations have been affected since the inauguration of the system in December 2002. While on the first day, the system had malfunctioned due to improper handling of the doors and alarms by the hordes of curious passengers, in January 2003 a serious power frequency problem had affected the operations. Then in a freak incident, a pigeon had led to a short-circuit in a train - leading to a delay.
