Slight fall in temperatures

NEW DELHI MARCH 17. The weatherman has forecast a slight fall in day/night temperatures with mainly clear sky on Thursday. The maximum and minimum temperatures would hover around 35 and 19 Degree Celsius.

The maximum and minimum temperatures recorded at Safdarjung on Wednesday were 37 and 20 degrees Celsius, while Palam recorded 36.4 and 16.4 degrees Celsius respectively. The maximum humidity at Safdarjung and Palam was 75 and 94 per cent, while the minimum was 28 and 15 per cent respectively.

`Torched' man succumbs

NEW DELHI MARCH 17. A 25-year-old man, who was abducted and then burnt allegedly by his brother-in-law and his accomplices at Anand Vihar in East Delhi this past week, succumbed to his injuries at GTB Hospital late last night.

The police have arrested his brother-in-law and launched a hunt for other accomplices.

Extortionist arrested

NEW DELHI MARCH 17. A gangster has been arrested by the Crime Branch of the Delhi police for allegedly trying to extort money from a leading cable operator. The accused is a member of the notorious Mahender Pehalwan gang.

He has been identified as Hoshiar Singh, a resident of Sonepat in Haryana. The other three have been identified as Azad Singh, Kapoor Singh and Raj Kumar Sethi.

Robbed

NEW DELHI MARCH 17. Three young men on a motorcycle allegedly robbed a shopkeeper of his scooter that had Rs. 2.25 lakh in its boot at Ashok Vihar in North-West Delhi today.

Around 1-45 p.m., the shopkeeper, Harsh Taneja, was in the Ashok Vihar area when three young men on a motorcycle pushed him from behind, owing to which he fell on the ground. The culprits then fled with his scooter. Taneja claimed that he had kept Rs. 2.25 lakh in the scooter's boot.

The police have registered a robbery case and are investigating.

Nabbed

NEW DELHI MARCH 17. One person has been arrested by the Economic Offences Wing of the Delhi police on charges of helping an undertrial escape from jail by forging the signature of a judge. Two persons have already been arrested in the case.

According to the police, the accused Vipin Sachdeva, allegedly involved in several cases of cheating, had helped another accused, Rajesh Kumar, to escape from Tihar Central Jail by tampering the jail release order in June last year. Vipin was arrested on Tuesday.

Arrested

NEW DELHI MARCH 17. Nine people, who were allegedly involved in robbery cases, have been arrested during two separate operations conducted by the Crime Branch of the Delhi police.

In the first operation conducted near Okhla railway station and arrested five culprits. They were identified as Wasim, Manoj, Ashok, Krishan Pal and Imtiaz. Four other culprits - Yash Pal, Girish, Ravinder, and Waryam Singh, -- were arrested from Paschim Vihar in West Delhi.
