NALGONDA, MARCH 18. The People's War shot dead the secretary of the Telugu Desam Party's Bhoodan Pochampally mandal unit, Udata Srihari (30), at Indriyala village of the same mandal today. The Superintendent of Police, N. Balasubramanyam, said three persons, clad in lungis and shirts, waylaid Srihari on the outskirts of Indriyala. They stopped his two-wheeler while he was on his way to attend a wedding along with his wife and son, and fired two rounds at him in close range. Srihari died on the spot. Police sources said that Srihari and his wife prayed for mercy. However, the naxals did not pay heed to their plea and indiscriminately opened fire. It is learnt that the trio threatened to kill a former village sarpanch, who tried to raise the alarm while they were escaping from the scene. He took shelter in a nearby telephone booth when one of the naxals asked the other two to open fire at him. A pall of gloom descended on the village following the murder of the TDP leader, who had wanted to tender resignation from his party post in the face of naxal warnings. However, he deferred his decision following the request of the party cadres not to do so due to elections. The Minister, Uma Madhava Reddy, and several TDP leaders and activists called on the bereaved family and expressed condolences.
