11 held, stolen vehicles and jewels seized

CHENNAI, MARCH 18. The City Police have seized a huge haul of stolen automobiles and jewellery over the past four months and have arrested 11 persons.

On Thursday, the City Police Commissioner, R. Nataraj, restored the stolen properties to their owners. The Police seized 60 motorcycles, three cars, 1.8 kg of gold, Rs. 23,000 in cash and two mobile phones during their intensive drive for the past four months.

The Commissioner said a special team, led by G. Karthikeyan, Deputy Commissioner-Kilpauk Range, was formed to investigate into the numerous vehicle thefts reported from the city and its outskirts. During investigation, the police team reportedly stumbled upon a racket which stole motorcycles from the city and its suburbs and sold them at low price at Vandavasi, Tindivanam and Thiruvannamalai.

The Police picked up Alauddin, who allegedly led the racket, and on interrogation, learnt that he stole more than 45 motorcycles from various marriage halls, hospitals and commercial halls in the city. Most of the bikes were of Hero Honda splendor make. Three other persons, alleged to be his accomplices, were arrested. Police said the group stole the vehicles, changed the number plates and sold them off at low prices to people at and around Thivuvannamalai.

Besides, the team also cracked a host of housebreaking cases and arrested one Solomon a.k.a. Vinod Kumar (36) of Ambattur. They recovered over 100 sovereigns jewellery from him. Police said he was involved in thefts and break in at Purasawalkam, Teynampet, Triplicane, Jam Bazaar, K.K. Nagar, Kancheepuram and Vellore, and Vijayawada in Andhra Pradesh.

Besides, the team cracked various other crimes pertaining to car thefts, burglary and chain snatching and recovered the stolen property.
