BANGALORE, MARCH 19. The number of voters in the State has increased by 7,73,822 compared to the number when the rolls were revised previously. The number of voters is 3,84,48,980 as on January 1, 2003, according to the Joint Chief Electoral Officer, H.C. Nagendra. He told presspersons here on Friday that the increase in the number of voters, excluding service voters, was 2.05 per cent. The last date for submitting applications for enrolling names in the voters list was March 23 and applications received after that would not be accepted. The names of the applicants would be exhibited and they would be included in the electoral rolls after a week. Mr. Nagendra said the number of polling booths had been reduced from 44,000 to 39,696. Only one booth would be set up this time in place of two opened for the 1999 elections at a distance of 2 km. between them, if they had fewer than 1,500 voters now. Booths with more than 3,500 voters would be bifurcated.
