NEW DELHI, MARCH 19. The veteran Congress leader, K. Karunakaran, the former Chief Election Commissioner, M. S. Gill, and the Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee chief, Gurcharan Singh Tohra, were among the eight elected unopposed to the Rajya Sabha today. Mr. Gill, Ashwini Kumar and Dharampal Sabharwal (all Congress) and Mr. Tohra and Virender Singh Bajwa (Shiromani Akali Dal) were elected unopposed from Punjab. The State Legislature Secretary announced their election after the expiry of the deadline for withdrawal of nominations this evening. Mr. Kumar and Mr. Tohra were re-elected. Mr. Karunakaran, A. Vijayaraghavan (CPI-M) and P. V. Abdul Wahab (IUML) were elected unopposed from Kerala. The All-India Congress Committee spokesman, Anand Sharma, and Radha Raman Shashtri were left in the fray for the lone Rajya Sabha seat in Himachal Pradesh as the deadline for withdrawal of nomination expired today. The polling would be held on March 26 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Mr. Gill told reporters that it was "an honour" for him to enter the Rajya Sabha as he always considered Parliament supreme and said he would raise Punjab's voice in the Upper House. Rubbishing reports that his entry into Parliament would "undermine" the institution of Election Commission, Mr. Gill said: "Wrong things are spread against me." - PTI
