ANANTAPUR, MARCH 20. The district unit of Communist Party of India has termed the Central drought assessment team's visit to the district on Friday as an eyewash. Earlier visits of such teams failed to benefit the district in any way, the party said. Talking to newspersons here today, the district secretary of the party, M.V. Ramana, and the town secretary, C. Jaffer, also condemned the attitude of the District Collector, Y.V. Anuradha, towards the people during the team's visit to various areas in the district. They took exception to the Collector's refusal to allow a delegation of the CPI, which went to Dharmavaram to submit a report on the prevailing drought situation, from meeting the team. She had explained to the party delegation that there was no need to submit a memorandum as she had explained everything in detail to the team members. The CPI leaders sought to know whether there was any need for the Central team to visit the district, if the Collector had already explained to them the prevailing drought situation in the district. In that case, she could as well go to Delhi and submit a report, they said. "Is it democracy or just bureaucracy,'' they asked. . Criticising the Chief Minister, N. Chandrababu Naidu, they said that his promise to compensate farmers who lost their crops at the TDP's January 28 meeting here had failed to take concrete shape. The fate of representations made to the Central teams, which had visited the district earlier, for changing the unit of crop insurance from mandal to village was not known so far.
