AGP complains of phone tapping
Sushanta Talukdar
GUWAHATI
The Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) has lodged a complaint with the Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) alleging that telephone calls of leaders of the opposition party have been `tapped' at the behest of Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi and his officers.
Reacting to the allegation, Gogoi described it as `baseless and fabricated.' "Our government will never stoop so low as to tape telephones of opposition parties. The allegation is baseless. There has been no report of any telephone tapping from anywhere in the state," he added.
In his written complaint faxed to the CEC, AGP general secretary Dilip Kumar Saikia alleged that telephone lines of party leaders were being tapped to obtain confidential party information regarding the March 26 election to the two Rajya Sabha seats from the state.
Saikia urged the CEC to conduct an enquiry and initiate appropriate action to book the `guilty persons' to ensure a free and fair election to the two Rajya Sabha seats from Assam. "This is a serious matter and amounts to interference with the privacy of an individual as well as the political party. This is also against the standing Supreme Court ruling on the matter," the AGP leader said in his complaint.
The Chief Minister, however, asserted that the Congress is sure of winning both the seats.
