Aranthangi traders down shutters

By Our Staff Reporter

PUDUKOTTAI, MARCH 20 . Traders in Aranthangi downed shutters today to protest the attack on an electric motor retail shop by some persons on Wednesday night. They took out a procession, condemning the attack and demanded action against those involved in the attack.

According to the police, Karthikeyan of Manamelkudi Union had purchased an electric motor at Pudukottai and sought a replacement from its branch at Aranthangi after it developed some snag.

However, a wordy duel broke out between the shop owner at Aranthangi, Rameshkumar and Karthikeyan over the matter.

Following the incident, which occurred on the night of March 17, a group of persons attacked the shop and damaged the showcase. A few supporters of Rameshkumar were alleged to have intercepted and assaulted the assailants. The rival groups lodged separate complaints with the police. Subsequently, Saravanan and Porselvan, who were allegedly involved in the attack on the shop were arrested by the police and later released on bail.

Not satisfied with the police action, the shopkeepers downed shutters, urging the police to initiate action against the perpetrators of the crime.

The traders also took out a procession in the town led by the president of the Aranthangi Chamber of Commerce, L.Kailasanathan. Senior police officials held talks with the traders and assured them that appropriate action would be initiated, following which shopkeepers opened their shops by evening.
