Congress, NCP formalise agreement

NEW DELHI, MARCH 20. The Congress today formalised its seat-sharing arrangement with the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) in Maharashtra for the Lok Sabha elections. Of the 48 seats in the State, the Congress will contest 26 and the NCP 18. The two parties have agreed to allot one seat each to the three factions of the Republican Party of India, and the Malegaon seat for the Janata Dal (Secular).

The combined vote share of the Congress and the NCP was more than that of the BJP and the Shiv Sena candidates in constituencies such as Bhandara, Beed, Mumbai North East, Mumbai South, Buldhana, Chimur, Dhanu, Dhule, Erandol, Hingoli, Jalgoan,Jalna, Jalgaon, Kopargaon,, Nashik,Aurangabad, Osmanabad, Parbhani, Pune,Ramtek, Ratnagiri and Thane.

Briefing the media, the Congress general secretary, Vylar Ravi, and the NCP general secretary, Praful Patel, said the windfall was in favour of the Congress-NCP combine. "We will repeat our performance of 1998," Mr. Patel said. The Congress president, Sonia Gandhi, and the NCP chief, Sharad Pawar, would address a series of joint public rallies.
