EC recognises old Samata Party
By Our Legal Correspondent
NEW DELHI,
MARCH 20.
The Election Commission today recognised the Brahmanand Mandal faction of the Samata Party to function under the name of Samata Party.
Sources in the Commission said the decision to recognise the Mandal faction was a sequel to the objections by Mr. Mandal to the merger of the party (headed by the Defence Minister, George Fernandes) with the Janata Dal (U), and claiming that he was still with the original Samata Party.
The sources said the Commission, after hearing both the factions, was of the view that the merger of the party was not complete and hence the group led by Mr. Mandal was being allowed to function in the name of Samata Party. The Commission has, however, not taken any decision on allotting the Samata Party's "torch" symbol to the faction, sources said and added that Mr. Mandal's group had been asked to apply for a reserved symbol under Rule 10 (a) of the Representation of the People Act.
