Samajwadi Party rules out tie-up with Congress
By Our Special Correspondent
NEW DELHI,
MARCH 20.
The Samajwadi Party today ruled out the possibility of a last-minute alliance with the Congress in Uttar Pradesh. "It is too late now, we have already finalised our alliance and allotted seats to Ajit Singh," said its general secretary, Amar Singh.
The SP leader blamed the Congress for the failure of the two parties to come together and accused it of "trying to flirt with both the SP and the Bahujan Samaj Party at the same time." Mr. Singh said the Congress after having repeatedly spurned his party's offer of a tie-up was turning to it after being turned down by the BSP.
The SP leader also denied reports that his party was averse to putting up a joint Opposition candidate against the Prime Minister, Atal Bihari Vajpayee, from Lucknow.
