SHIMLA, MARCH.20. The first India Cup River Rafting Championship organised by the Indian Rafting Foundation in collaboration with the International Rafting Federation and the Department of Tourism and Civil Aviation, Himachal Pradesh, ended here last evening. In the men's event, the Czech Republic won the championship whereas Austria and India finished second and third, respectively. In the women's event, the Czech Republic won the trophy by beating Slovakia by three seconds. The Indian women's team finished third in this event. The event was held in three categories -- sprint, slalom and down river race. In the sprint event for women, Slovakia won the gold medal and in the men's category, the Czech Republic stood first. In the slalom event and down river races for women as well as men, the honours were won by the teams of the Czech Republic. Col. Balwant Sandhu, President of the Indian Rafting Foundation, presenting the vote of thanks expressed hope that the event would attract more teams from India and abroad in the next championship. Thirteen teams from India and abroad participated in the seven-day Championship held in the Sutlej river at Tattapani near Shimla.
