NJP to contest 25 seats on Janata Party symbol

By Our Special Correspondent

MADURAI, MARCH 20. The Janata Party has "modified" its support to the All-India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK) in the Lok Sabha elections, following an understanding reached with the New Justice Party. The NJP will contest 25 seats on the Janata Party symbol in Tamil Nadu.

Talking to newspersons here today, the Janata Party president, Subramanian Swamy, said his party would support NJP candidates in 25 constituencies to be identified soon. It would not support the AIADMK in Madurai (where Dr. Swamy is contesting) and Periakulam (where T. T. V. Dinakaran is the AIADMK nominee). It would support the AIADMK candidates in the other constituencies in recognition of the "patriotic stance" taken by the Chief Minister, Jayalalithaa, against the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE).

The Janata Party would not hesitate to support "any serious Congress leader" who revolted in Nagercoil and Pondicherry "against the anti-national decision of Ms. Sonia Gandhi to concede the seats" to the Communist Party of India (Marxist) and the Pattali Makkal Katchi.

Dr. Swamy said "an informal third front" had already emerged and it would form the Government at the Centre. It had a list of five "alternative candidates for Prime Minister", whose names would be made public after May 13. The doors of this informal front were open even to National Democratic Alliance constituents, except the Bharatiya Janata Party.

While expressing confidence over the Janata Party's potential to come to power in Karnataka, Dr. Swamy said he would be in a position to provide a third front in Tamil Nadu in the 2006 Assembly elections, if was elected to the Lok Sabha from Madurai.

The Janata Party leader felt that the "LTTE danger to Tamil Nadu had reduced" following the challenge thrown to the hegemonistic leadership of V. Prabhakaran by Karuna (Vinayagamoorthi Muralitharan.
