MAHBUBNAGAR, MARCH 20. Top leaders of the outlawed People's War had a narrow escape in an exchange of fire with the police today near Ghanpur village in Achampet mandal. The police recovered a huge haul of destructive material, including six Claymore mines, one grenade, 20 kg gelatine powder, seven live rounds of 522 pistol, a communication charger-battery, seven water cans, three pairs of olive-green dresses besides some utensils from the scene. The police suspect that some PW top brass, including the state committee member, Madhav, district committee secretary, Sudhakar, and Achampet dalam commander, Srisailam, along with 12 members of the party were holding a meeting. According to reports, a special police force and members of the Greyhounds, who were combing the hillock area on the outskirts of Ghanpur, spotted some naxalites. Noticing the police, the extremists opened fire and the police retaliated. The exchange of fire lasted for 15 minutes. All PW members managed to escape.
