NEW DELHI, MARCH 20. The Delhi Bharatiya Janata Party president, Harsha Vardhan, has lambasted the Congress for its "non-serious attitude towards the social security scheme for workers of unorganised sector launched recently by the BJP-led National Democratic Government at the Centre". Accusing the Congress of false propaganda against the scheme, Mr. Vardhan in a statement here said it was for the first time since Independence that such a unique and worker-friendly policy had been implemented. "The Congress in its over 40 years of rule never thought about the welfare of those working in unorganised sector, and now when such a thing has been initiated, it was misleading people to cover up its failure," he alleged. According to the Delhi BJP chief, over 37 crore workers in the unorganised sector would benefit for it in terms of economic and social security. Stating that the pioneering scheme would prove to be a milestone for crores of workers and labourers of unorganised sector, Mr. Vardhan said initially the scheme been started in 50 districts and would soon cover the entire nation that would benefit workers in the age group of 18 to 50 years whose families had been facing economic insecurity for the past five decades. Under the scheme, all workers would be able to get various economic benefits including pension while the family of a worker who gets crippled or dies during service would also get monetary benefits from the scheme, said Mr. Vardhan, asking the Congress leaders to rise above their petty political interests and help workers to get benefits from the scheme.
