CHENNAI, MARCH 20. "We need to understand the value of Telugu before we attempt to promote the language and culture among other communities," M. Balamuralikrishna, veteran musician and adviser to the Andhra Pradesh Government on Cultural Affairs, said yesterday. Participating in the Ugadi (Telugu New Year's day) celebrations organised by the World Telugu Federation (WTF), he said the efforts at promoting Telugu must begin from within the Telugu speaking community. He appreciated the efforts of federations striving for the development of the language and art of Andhra Pradesh. The WTF president, Indira Dutt, said the federation had taken up various projects, including free Telugu classes, aid to poor artistes and support to talented artistes with a view to promote the language, literature and art. Provision of facilities for Telugus in Tamil Nadu to learn their mother tongue and the metamorphosis undergone by the language were some of the issues discussed. Veteran Telugu writer, Ramalakshmi Arudra, former head of the Telugu department, Presidency College, D. Chinnikrishnaiah, and the WTF secretary-general, B.S.R. Krishna, participated.
