Indo-French transradial workshop opens

By Our Staff Reporter

HYDERABAD, MARCH 20. The `transradial' procedure for coronary angiograms and angioplasty is being increasingly preferred in the world, to the `femoral approach', said Yves Louvard, a leading cardiac surgeon from the Institut d' Jacques Cartier, France.

The learned doctor was in the city as a key resource person at the first-ever two-day, `Indo-French Transradial Workshop' organised by the Yashoda Hospitals here. It was attended by over 200 cardiologists from all over the country and other countries like Sri Lanka and Bangladesh. Interacting with presspersons after the inaugural, Dr. Yves Louvard said that last year approximately 1,00,000 cardiac surgeries had taken place in France. Of this, 36,000 were transradial procedures, which was up by over 6,000 the year before. Apart from a reduction in the pain component, the `transradial' procedure meant that patients could be saved considerable expense by way of shorter stay in hospitals, he said.

The Governor, Surjit Singh Barnala, who inaugurated the workshop, said Hyderabad had emerged health capital of the country and that patients were coming here from other metros. However, the old adage that `prevention is better than cure', still held good. The Director-General, Andhra Pradesh Medical and Health Services, K. Anji Reddy, said virtually no disease was beyond diagnosis today and added that interventional surgery with minimum incisions was the answer.

The Director, Nizams Institute of Medical Sciences, Kakarla Subba Rao, released a compact disc detailing the transradial procedure. He said pharmaco-genomics was going to radically change medicare. The Executive Director, Yashoda Hospitals, G.S. Rao, said a training programme of this nature in Hyderabad would go a long way in popularising this procedure, for which there were only limited centres. The transradial procedure was beneficial in several respects, he said C. Raghu, an Interventional Cardiologist with Yashoda Hospitals, proposed a vote of thanks.
