Three women rag-pickers held

The Punjagutta police on Friday arrested three woman rag-pickers -- Parvathi, Koushalya Bai and Satabai -- responsible for a series of thefts and recovered from them over 11 tola gold ornaments. A bank employee, Meenakshi, had lodged a police complaint on March 7 stating that some unidentified women had relieved her of a gold necklace and Rs. 300 in cash while travelling in an RTC bus from SR Nagar to Nampally. Based on credible information, the trio was arrested by the constables - J. Rajender, K. Sai Ram and G. Ratna Raju. Three gold mangalsutrams were also recovered from them.

Held on charge of cheating

The Asifnagar police on Saturday arrested one, Anwarullah Khan alias Disco Baba of Karwan, for allegedly collecting money from gullible public stating that they could get hidden wealth by offering prayers. Gold-coated bricks made of brass, biscuits and coins moulded with inscriptions dating to the Nizam-Ul-Mulk's period of 1920's were seized from him. Khan reportedly collected Rs. 3.82 lakhs from one, Md. Haneef of Syed Ali Guda, after `planting' gold-coated articles in his house and convincing him that he got them because of prayers.

Shop burgled

Miscreants gained entry into a Nokia dealer showroom on Nampally Station Road and took away Rs. 55,000 in cash and at least 40 Nokia cell phones, all worth Rs. 4 lakh in the wee hours of Saturday, the Abids police said on Saturday.
