Narayana Pisharody dead

By Our Staff Reporter

THRISSUR, MARCH 21. The Sanskrit scholar and writer, K.P. Narayana Pisharody, died at his residence here this afternoon after prolonged illness. He was 95. An authority on Sanskrit literature, Mr. Pisharody had translated some of the classics in the language into Malayalam, including `Sreekrishna Vilasam Kavyam' (1935), `Kumarasambhavam' (1951), Neelakanta's `Kalyana Saugandhikam Vyayogam' (1956), Bhasa's `Swapnavasavadatham' (1969), `Mathavilasa Prahasanam' (1984) and `Dootavakyam' (1988).

He had translated into Sanskrit such Malayalam works as `Kesaveeyam' (1972), `Mahatyagi -- Malayala Khanda Kavya' (1976) and `Sreekrishnacharitham Mahakavyam' (1993).

Some of the credit for having popularised Koodiyattom in the post-Independence period goes to Mr. Pisharody. He infused academic depth into its practice. In the early 1950s, he was invited to present a paper on Koodiyattom at a seminar organised by the Guruvayur Devaswom. Mr. Pisharody did extensive research on the subject and held wide-ranging discussions with practitioners such as Mani Madhava Chakyar, Painkulam Rama Chakyar, Ammannur Chachu Chakyar and Ammannur Madhava Chakyar.

Mr. Pisharody's presentation was broadcast by All India Radio, Kozhikode. N.V. Krishna Warrier, the then editor of the Mathrubhoomi, was impressed by the depth of the treatise and way it demystified the age-old art form. He got Mr. Pisharody to write for the newspaper scholarly introductions to the shows by masters at the Vadakkunatha temple here. The body will be cremated, with State honours, at his ancestral house, Kodikkunath Pisharam, at Pallipuram, Pattambi, on Monday.

The Chief Minister, A.K.Antony, the Minister for Cultural Affairs Minister, G. Karthikeyan, and the Information and Parliamentary Affairs Minister, M.M.Hassan, have condoled the death Mr. Pisharody.
