HYDERABAD, MARCH 21. Northern Railway outplayed North-Eastern Railway for an emphatic 6-2 win in a round-robin league match of the 25th all-India inter-Railway women's hockey tournament held at Begumpet Police Stadium here on Sunday. Preetham, Gurpreet Kaur (2), Surender Kaur, Sumarjeet Kaur, Kamal Bahal were the scorers for NR, while Meenakshi, Anitha Ekka slotted in for NER. Dominating the game from the beginning, NR was clearly the superior side as the forward line of Preetham, Gurpreet and Sumarjeet was all over the rival defence with regularity. And quite expectedly, it shot into lead in the second minute when Preetham was on target with a field goal. Within 10 minutes, Gurpreet was in the scoring act with yet another fine, solo effort. Things never looked good for the hapless NER despite Meenakshi and Anitha showing patches of individual brilliance. On the other hand, NR struck once more before the break through Surender Kaur with yet another impressive field goal as she dribbled her way down the wings to essay a rasping carpet drive. Though NER scored its first goal within nine minutes on resumption through Meenakshi, it did not deter the rivals who continued to score when it mattered the most. Sumarjeet, Gurpreet and Kamala Bahal were successful once each and all through field goals to give NR a convincing 6-1 lead. The only saving grace for NER was when Anitha Ekka reduced the margin converting a penalty-corner in the 64thminute. In another match, defending champion, Western Railway scored a hard-fought 3-1 win over Central Railway. Captain Suraj Lata Devi started the proceedings in style with a fine effort in the very first minute. In the 18th minute, Bindu made it 2-0 for Western Railway. After the break, Western struck the third goal through Suraj Lata Devi in the 46th minute. Sangeeta Singh converted a penalty-corner for Central Railway in the 65th minute.
