CBI yet to clarify State's role in scam probe

By Our Staff Reporter

BANGALORE, MARCH 21. The course of action of the Stamp Paper Investigation Team (STAMPIT) in the investigation of the cases related to the stamp paper racket remains unclear as the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) is yet to clearly state the type of assistance it wants from STAMPIT.

The Supreme Court has directed the CBI to investigate 48 cases related to the racket in the country. Of the 48 cases, 10 are from the State. In its order, the apex court directed the State governments concerned to assist the CBI in its investigation. However, official sources say that the CBI is yet to clarify the role that it wants STAMPIT to play. In its affidavit filed before the Supreme Court on January 30, the CBI asked for a direction to investigation teams in States to cooperate with it and provide access to material collected by them.

The CBI team has not held discussions with STAMPIT. It has also not gone through the cases related to the racket in the State, according to sources.
