dated March 23, 1954: Peaceful merger

Prime Minister Nehru said in the House of the People on March 22 that there could be no greater evidence of the real desire of the people of the French India settlements than the very strong spontaneous movement inside the enclaves demanding merger with India. The Prime Minister, who was replying to a short notice question by Mr. M.S. Gurupadaswamy on the recent assault by the Pondicherry police on a group of workers demanding merger of foreign pockets into the Indian Union, said, "The next step should be peaceful transfer of power. Our case has always been that the merger should be effected by peaceful methods. It has now been clearly shown by the people of the Communes, councillors and by the industrial workers separately, that the people of the settlements desire merger with India. That point as to what the people of the settlements desire should be taken now as definitely settled. The next step should be peaceful transfer of power."
