Sir, Mr. Vajpayee's remarks that the Centre will back Maharashtra if it takes action against the foreign author who wrote a controversial book about Shivaji, and that if Maharashtra took no action, the Central Government would act on its own (March 21) are interesting. Maharashtra had said that it banned the book by James Laine because it feared law and order problems, but our Prime Minister has elevated the banning of books to state policy.
