DEHRA DUN, MARCH 22. Three students of the Indian Institute of Technology (Roorkee) were feared drowned in the Ganga Canal yesterday. The tragedy struck when four third year architecture students were sitting on the banks of the canal, about 2 km from the IIT. Aditya Lele lost his balance and was carried away by the swift currents of the canal. Punit Gupta was carried away as he tried to save Aditya, and Umesh Singh met the same fate as he tried to save his friends. However, the fourth student, Rakesh Singh, who also rushed to rescue his friends, was however saved as he knew swimming. Water in the canal has been stopped and police and army divers are trying to recover the bodies, a senior official said.
