Valencia closes in on Real Madrid

LONDON, MARCH 22. Valencia moved to within one point of stumbling Real Madrid in the Spanish league on Sunday while record-setting Arsenal and AC Milan continued to impress in England and Italy.

Valencia, which last won the Spanish title in 2002, got three goals from Miguel Angel ``Mista'' Ferrer to help trounce Mallorca 5-1 and further close the gap on defending champion Madrid.

Asier del Horno scored the match-winner and added the insurance as Athletic de Bilbao embarrassed Madrid 4-2. Fran Yeste and Ismael Urzaiz also struck for Bilbao while Raul Gonzalez scored both for Madrid, which is still playing without the injured Ronaldo.

Arsenal extended its unbeaten streak to 29 matches — equalising an English record — by downing Bolton 2-1. Robert Pires and Dennis Bergkamp netted for the Gunners, who are also in contention for the FA Cup and Champions Cup.

The results:
