CUDDAPAH, MARCH 22 . The A.P. Mining Workers Union State general secretary, D.R. Sreenivasa Rao, and vice-president, Radhakrishna Reddy, launched an indefinite hunger strike in front of the Collectorate on Monday, demanding that the relatives of 22 workers of Mangampet Barytes Project who died in harness be given jobs on compassionate grounds. The union's State president, Ch. Chandrasekhar Reddy, accused the A.P. Mineral Development Corporation authorities of adopting an adamant stance on the issue. Rejecting the offer to pay compensation of Rs. 50,000 to each bereaved family in lieu of a job, he alleged bias and said that similar appointments were recently made in Singareni Collieries. Mr. Chandrasekhar Reddy also demanded that the 130 daily wage workers, who have been working for 28 years at APMDC, be put on regular rolls. He charged the Government with ignoring the Central Labour Tribunal's directions to make them permanent employees at one go or in phases. He said that the fast became inevitable as neither the Government nor the APMDC officials had responded to the workers' relay hunger strike for the last 33 days.
