Take water conservation to villages: Collector

By Our Staff Reporter

KURNOOL, MARCH 22. The Collector, Ajay Jain, has stressed the need for taking the concept of water conservation to rural areas where exploitation of ground water was highest.

Addressing a workshop in connection with World Water Day here on Monday, he said the ground water situation was alarming in some parts of the district. Though large amounts were spent on water harvesting structures, the benefit could not be seen immediately because of drought conditions and poor rainfall.

He said under Neeru-meeru programme, Rs. 118 crores was spent on enhancing the water storing capability by 1,048 lakh cubic meters. Priority was given to the drip irrigation system to grow crops with less water: Rs. 63 crores was spent on it.

The Assistant Director of the Ground Water Department, Pullaiah, said the average water table, which was recorded at 7.7 meters in the district in 2000-01, declined to 10.9 meters and 11.63 meters in the subsequent years.

The water table was being observed in 79 basins in the district. Sinking of borewells was banned in the Yellamma Vagu basin in the cluster of villages comprising Gargeyapuram, Nutanapalli, Pasupula, Ketavaram and Nannur. Also, Chagalamarri, Sirivel and Pagidyala mandals were placed under category-I recommending more water harvesting structures.

The Project Director of the District Water Management Agency, M. Rama Rao, said cultivation of hybrid varieties and drip irrigation was being promoted to produce more with less water. He said the agency would take up a campaign to bring awareness among the public about water conservation. The president of Jana Vikas Society, B.N. Chetty and N. Sivaprasad Reddy of GPR college spoke.
