Need to increase water storage capacity stressed

HYDERABAD: The expert on water, T. Hanumantha Rao, has said that the proposed river linking project may not meet the popular expectation that it has raised and called for an alternative approach of increasing water storage capacities.

Delivering the keynote address at the `World Water Day' celebrations here on Monday, Mr. Rao argued that it was pointless to divert flood flows from the Ganges to Mahanadi and Godavari during the monsoon, as all these rivers had flood flows during monsoon. Flood flow diversion from one river would fall into another similarly flooded river while the need was to ensure minimum flows in the river during the dry season to provide drinking water and sustain the ecology of these rivers. For this it was necessary to have storage reservoirs in large numbers. Earlier, the Chief Secretary, Mohan Kanda, highlighted the centrality of water to human lives. Clean drinking water and timely water for irrigation had already become hot political topics and arenas for competition, disputes and conflicts.
