Guntur
By Our Staff Reporter
GUNTUR, MARCH 22. The non-functional agricultural market yard at Sattenapalli in Guntur district came to life again on Monday with the opening of National Agricultural Cooperative Marketing Federation of India and A.P. Markfed counters for purchase of chilli. The Department of Marketing had invited exporters and traders to open their counters at the Sattenapalli market yard recently, but since they did not show interest in the current season, the Markfed took the initiative. The Agriculture Regional Joint Director, Israr Ahmed, opened the counter this morning. The Guntur market yard receives 1.5 crores of chilli bags (tikkis) annually, of which 25 lakhs come from Sattenapalli, which is the heartland of chilli growing area. Mr. Ahmed said chilli would be purchased at Rs.2,700 per quintal and asked farmers to maintain quality. The Government had recently decided to open the market yard at Sattenapalli to reduce travel for farmers and pressure on the Guntur yard after the disturbances at the yard during March. Farmers would be required to produce pattadar passbooks or identity cards with proof of residence, the market yard secretary, P. Sivaramayya, said. The Markfed counter at Guntur picked up 6,000 tikkis on Monday.
