Court to hear petition against jailbreaks

By Our Legal Correspondent

NEW DELHI, MARCH 22. The Supreme Court will hear next week a public interest litigation (PIL) petition alleging that increasing nexus among politicians, police, bureaucrats and criminals was the reason for the growing umber of jailbreaks and seeking remedial measures.

When the matter came up for hearing today, a Bench, comprising Justice N. Santosh Hegde and Justice B. P. Singh, while adjourning the hearing on a petition filed by Manzoor Ali Khan for a week, asked the petitioner to make the States necessary parties.

The petitioner alleged that the jailbreaks were a direct result of a nexus among politicians, bureaucrats and criminals.

The recent jailbreaks in the country not only exposed the security and state of the jails but also raised alarming questions about the role of police officials.

Terrorists and secessionists were being allowed to escape from jails by the prison staff. Such incidents not only affected the rule of law, but also caused grave concern about the security, sovereignty and integrity of the country.

The petitioner contended that people would lose faith in the rule of law if terrorists were allowed to escape in this fashion.
