Met office thrown open to public

By Our Special Correspondent

HYDERABAD, MARCH 22. The weather, rain forecasts and wind direction alerts issued to aircrafts and cyclone warnings by the State Meteorological Office (SMO), involve a lot of expertise and an array of instruments.

For instance, the SMO sends balloons into the skies early in the day and again before nightfall to determine wind speed, temperature and humidity in the atmosphere. The data so collected is correlated with that obtained by a variety of instruments, including a 200-Km range radar, and with the satellite imageries, before the weather report/forecast is issued. People came to know about these little known aspects when the SMO was thrown open to public on the occasion of World Water Day and Metrological Day celebrations being held here today and tomorrow. It is open for public from 10 am to 5 pm.
