New building for varsity

By Our Staff Reporter

TIRUNELVELI, MARCH 22. For the first time since its inception, the Manonmaniam Sundaranar University is getting a new spacious building with the area of over 10,000 sq. ft. at a cost of over Rs.1 crore, donated by the Chairman of the Aditanar Educational Institutions and Director of the Daily Thanthi, B. Sivanthi Adityan.

One of the leading architects of Tamil Nadu, Narayana Rao, whose design was approved by the Chief Minister, Jayalalithaa, for the proposed new Secretariat at Kotturpuram in Chennai, will design the building to house the Departments of Management Studies and Criminology and Criminal Justice.

The project will also include a huge centrally air-conditioned conference hall with state-of-the-art features.

The proposed building, to be christened `Dr. Sivanthi Aditanar Perumanai,' will be a "construction marvel" in its design in the entire Southern Tamil Nadu, university sources said.

Presiding over a function to lay the foundation stone for the project on the university premises here today, the Vice-Chancellor, K. Chockalingam, said the construction of this "landmark structure" on the university premises would be completed within six months, as the university administration intended to conduct an international-level seminar in the proposed conference hall in October.

Listing the achievements of the university in the past two years, Dr. Chockalingam appealed to philanthropists take part in the all-round development of the university, just like Mr. Sivanthi Adityan, "who had transformed Tiruchendur, one of the most backward areas of the State, into the `Oxford of South India' by establishing several institutions under one umbrella, imparting edification on engineering, education, physical education, arts and science subjects in the holy coastal town."

Unveiling the plaque to mark the laying of the foundation stone, Mr. Sivanthi Adityan thanked the administration and the Syndicate for permitting him to donate a building to the university, carrying the name of the great Tamil scholar, Manonmaniam Sundaranar.
