Vajpayee seeks support to complete `unfinished agenda'

MAHARAJGANJ (UTTAR PRADESH), MARCH 22 . Claiming that the National Democratic Alliance rule has changed the face of India, the Prime Minister, Atal Bihari Vajpayee, said today that the BJP was seeking re-election to complete the "path-breaking" projects it had initiated during its first full term at the Centre.

"We want to complete the incomplete work... roads are not complete and the plan to link rivers for ending floods and droughts in the country is to be implemented," he told an election rally here.

"For this we have come to seek your support, not just votes," he added.

"We promised one crore jobs every year. And 88 lakh people have been given employment opportunities. There is some shortfall, we will bridge that," he said.

Listing the government's achievements, Mr. Vajpayee said from creating road infrastructure to giving farmers the right price for their crop and cheaper credit and credit cards, the picture of the country had changed.

"We constructed more number of rural houses in the last six years compared to the 14 years of Congress rule," he said.

The NDA Government, the Prime Minister said, had spent Rs. 11,000 crores under the Indira Awas Yojana for providing 55 lakh houses as against Rs. 8,000 crores spent in construction of 53 lakh houses during the Congress rule.

"Our endeavour is to see that no one dies of hunger," he said, saying that the Government was selling wheat at Rs. 2 a kg and rice at Rs. 3 a kg to the poorest of the poor.

The right to vote was the biggest weapon in the hands of the poor and they should use it judiciously.
