TIRUCHI, MARCH 22. The All -India Overseas Bank Employees Union, affiliated to the National Confederation of Bank Employees has urged the Indian Overseas Bank management to take steps to absorb jewel appraisers as bank employees with immediate effect. In a statement here yesterday, the president of the union, L. Balasubramanian said jewel appraisers were the backbone of the rural lending of the bank and about 20 per cent of the loans extended by the bank to the priority sector was through jewel loans. As such, the appraisers have become an integral part of the banking activities and deserved better treatment. He wanted the bank management to implement the award given by the Industrial Tribunal that the jewel appraisers were part time clerks with effect from 1990. Mr. Balasubramanian said over 100 appraisers had already crossed the age of 60 years and since they could not be recruited now, all benefits eligible to them during the service period should be provided without any delay. A meeting of the jewel appraisers was held in the morning. Mr. Balasubramanian, who is also the president of the NCBE, C.R. Chandrasekaran, former president of the AIOBEU, and P. Pazhaniapillai, convener of the Jewel Appraisers Committee, spoke.
