Tiruchi
By Our Staff Reporter
TIRUCHI, MARCH 22 . Steps to implement some of the long-pending development plans for Tiruchi district, including a ring road, an air cargo hub and a cold storage facility-cum-banana-fibre manufacturing unit, are among some of the major poll promises made by L. Ganesan, Marumalarchi Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (MDMK) candidate for the Tiruchi Lok Sabha constituency. Mr. Ganesan outlined his plans at a press conference here last week. In an apparent show of unity, Mr. Ganesan addressed the media along with senior district functionaries of the constituents of the Democratic Progressive Alliance (DPA), including the DMK district secretary, K.N. Nehru, the urban district Congress president, Jerome Arockiaraj and the Tamizhar Bhoomi leader, Ku. Pa. Krishnan. Both Messrs Ganesan and Nehru said the alliance partners were working in tandem and scotched speculation on `differences of opinion' among the parties. "All DPA partners were committed to working for the victory of our candidate," Mr. Nehru said. Mr. Nehru acknowledged that the late Rangarajan Kumaramangalam, who represented the constituency, mooted some of the development proposals, and some were implemented during the previous DMK regime. The DPA candidate would pursue the pending plans. Referring to the crisis faced by farmers in the delta region, Mr. Ganesan said he would strive to resolve the Cauvery water dispute and ensure remunerative prices for farm produce. He also promised to work for the establishment of a perfume extraction unit for the benefit of jasmine growers in the region. On the industrial front, he promised to work towards creating more jobs through the expansion of the Railway Central Workshops at Golden Rock and the Bharat Heavy Electrical Limited. Reviving the ailing cottage industry of synthetic gem cutting was also on his agenda. He would try to expedite the implementation of the Rs.50-crore flood prevention scheme that envisaged the widening of the Kudamuritti river in the city. Steps would be taken to widen the road over-bridges near the Junction, Thiruvanaikovil and on Salai Road, he said.
