Temperature

TIRUCHI, MARCH 22. The city today registered a maximum temperature of 38.0 degree Celsius and a minimum of 24.3 degree Celsius.

Seminar

The 27th personality development seminar was organised by the Tiruchi Thannambikkai Vasagar Vattam in the city on Sunday. Aruna Dinakaran from the Holy Cross College, who spoke on `Ninaikka marukkum manam', stressed the role of women in nation-building. The founder-chairman of the Vasagar Vattam, Lena, and others spoke.

Plea to hike pension

The Tamil Nadu Muazzins' Union, affiliated to the AITUC, has urged the Government to hike pension for Muazzins (people rendering Azan in mosques) from Rs. 500 to Rs. 1,000 per month and to extend it to all those, who had crossed the age of 60, in a resolution adopted at a meeting held here on Sunday. It also urged the Government to issue identity cards of the Tamil Nadu Physical Labour Welfare Board to the Muazzins and also to extend all benefits of the board to them. The State vice-president of the AITUC, C. Chandrakumar and the State secretary of the Union, J. Sheik Abdul Khader, spoke.

Life convict dies

R. Kaliyan (47) of Arumbavur in Perambalur district, a life convict, lodged in the Tiruchi Central Prisons, died today. Kaliyan suffered a bout of seizure in the prison today and was rushed to the K. A. P. Viswanatham Government Medical College Hospital, where he was declared dead.

Mass feeding

Mass feeding and special prayers by people belonging to various beliefs was the highlight of the special festival held at the Sri Selvamuthu Mariamman Temple at Taranallur Veeramanagar in the city on Sunday. The Inamdar, S. I. Basheer Ahmed and others participated.

Sanitation campaign camp

A total sanitation campaign camp was held in the Jayamkondaan village panchayat in the Musiri union on Sunday. The panchayat president, A. Panneerselvam, presided. The importance of constructing individual toilets and proper usage of women sanitary complexes were stressed. The local people and self-help group members participated.

108 `sankabishekam'

A special 108 sankabishekam was performed at Sri Sidhi Vinayagar Temple in Musiri on Sunday, marking the completion of Mandalabishekam. The temple was consecrated recently.

Car festival

Hundreds of devotees today pulled the two temple cars of the famous Jambukeswarar Akilandeswari Temple at Thiruvanaikovil.

The car festival formed part of the Panguni Peruvizha celebrated on a grand scale annually. The temple cars carrying the idols of the presiding deity, Jambukeswarar, and the Goddess Akilandeswari, reached the base in about two hours around noon.

The Srirangam MLA, K.K.Balasubramaniam, the Principal District and Sessions, V.Thayarammal, the Joint Commissioner of Hindu Religious and Charitable Endowments, B.Sivakumar, the Corporation zonal chairman, R.Manohar were among those who participated.

Mettur level

The level in the Mettur reservoir stood at 24.81 feet today. The inflow was 27 cusecs with no discharge.
