Sedam gets the ticket, finally

By Our Special Correspondent

GULBARGA, MARCH 22. Putting an end to speculation, the Bharatiya Janata Party has decided to re-nominate the former President of the State unit of the party, Basavaraj Patil Sedam, as its candidate from the Gulbarga Lok Sabha constituency. It has also decided to give the party ticket to three of his close supporters for the Assembly elections.

The renomination of Mr. Sedam had become uncertain following differences between him and the President of the State unit of the BJP, H.N. Ananth Kumar.

The entry of the former MP, B.G. Jawali, from the Congress and the former Minister, K.B. Shanappa, from the All-India Progressive Janata Dal further dimmed the Mr. Sedam's chances of getting the party ticket.

Mr. Sedam had to use his RSS and Sangh Parivar links to get renominated.

Mr. Ananth Kumar had tried to use the differences Mr. Sedam had with the local leaders such as M.R. Tanga and Shashil G. Namoshi to deny the party ticket to Mr. Sedam, but the party's central leadership had other ideas.

The supporters of Mr. Sedam who have been given the party ticket for the Assembly elections are Chandrashekhar Patil Ravoor (Gulbarga City), Shyamrao Pyati (Gurmitkal), and Shivalingappa Patil Naribol (Jewargi). However, another follower, Arvind Guruji, could not get the ticket from the Shahbad (Reserved) Assembly constituency. The party has given ticket to Sunil Valyapur, son-in-law of the former legislator, Govind Vodeyaraj.

The party is yet to decide on its nominees in four other Assembly segments of the Gulbarga Lok Sabha constituency — Chitapur, Afzalpur, Sedam, and Chincholi.

The decision to renominate Mr. Sedam was also a setback to the aspirations of Dr. Jawali who joined the party with the hope of getting the ticket to contest from the Gulbarga Lok Sabha constituency.

Sources said Dr. Jawali was promised the ticket by the central leadership before he joined the party.
