BANGALORE, MARCH 22. One thousand schoolchildren prayed and paraded for water on Monday as part of a rally organised by the Ecology and Environment Task Group of the YMCA and the Lions Club of Bangalore Orchards to commemorate World Water Day. Prema Cariappa, former Mayor, outlined the problem of water scarcity in Bangalore to the children and started off the rally, which went from the Vidhana Soudha to the Young Men's Christian Association (YMCA) in Nrupathunga Road. The theme of this year's parade was, "Pray together, save together," and the rally was attended by leaders of various communities who held a joint prayer for the success of water conservation. Children from five schools participated in the parade, including Stracey Memorial, Methodist Kannada School, Lourdes School, Indian Joseph High School, and the YMCA College of Physical Education. Arun Kumar, Secretary of the YMCA Task Group, said: "The aim of the rally is to create awareness among children about water conservation. Simple tips such as turning off taps in bathrooms when brushing your teeth can save litres and gallons of water in the city every day." Together with the Rotary Bangalore, the Lions Club and the Navachetana Trust, the YMCA plans to plant 10 to 15 lakh saplings on 10 to 15 acres of land near the catchment area of the Tippagondanahalli Reservoir. The project, which will cost between Rs. 30 lakh and Rs. 40 lakh over a period of three years, will prevent valuable water from draining away from the catchment area.
