Corporation accepts demand for equal wages of contract labourers

GULBARGA, MARCH 22. The Gulbarga City Municipal Corporation has accepted the demand by more than 500 contract labourers for equal wages. It has written to the Government to release extra funds to pay revised wages to the contract labourers who have been on an indefinite dharna in front of the administrative building of the city corporation for the past one-month.

Addressing a press conference here on Monday, the former Labour Minister, S.K. Kanta, who is spearheading the agitation of the contract labourers, released a copy of the letter written by the commissioner of the city corporation to the director of the Directorate of the Municipal Administration seeking release of additional funds of Rs. 9.50 lakhs a month to pay the revised wages of the contract labourers working as pourakarmikas in the corporation.

According to the letter written by the corporation commissioner, the contract labourers, who were now paid a consolidated amount of Rs. 2,175 per month as wages, were entitled to get monthly wages of Rs. 3,975 — basic wages of Rs. 2,500 a month and dearness allowance of Rs. 1,475.

The letter noted that at a tripartite meeting in Bangalore between the Labour Commissioner, the Director of the Municipal Administration and Mr. Kanta on March 1, it was agreed that there was a provision in the Industrial Disputes Act to prosecute the corporation authorities for not following the provisions in the Act according to Rule 25 (2) (v) (a) which stated that the workmen employed by the contractor performing the same or similar kind of work as the workmen directly employed by the principal employer were entitled to the wage rates, holidays, hours of work and other conditions of service of the workmen of the principal contractor.
