By Our Special Correspondent
SHIMOGA, MARCH 22. The Congress candidate in the Shimoga Lok Sabha Constituency, Ayanur Manjunath, claimed here on Monday that the Janata Party workers in the district had joined the Congress en masse. Mr. Manjunath was the Working President of the Janata Party State unit before joining the Congress. He told presspersons that "thousands of Janata Party workers", led by the President of its district unit, Mahendranath, had decided to join the Congress. Asked about the naming of Doddanna, comedian in Kannada films, as the Janata Party candidate in the constituency, he said: "Many do not know that Doddanna is one of my very few close friends who prompted me to join the Congress.'' Mr. Manjunath said he had launched his campaign in the district in right earnest.
