COIMBATORE, MARCH 22 . A recommendation that a consortium of autonomous colleges be formed to share information, and human resources, was unanimously passed at the conclusion of a three-day national workshop on autonomy at the PSG College of Arts and Science, here on March 20. The workshop was jointly organised by PSG CAS and the National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC). While calling for maximum flexibility in the introduction of the credit system, the participants urged that educational institutions offer career-oriented courses in larger numbers. Unique programmes designed by autonomous colleges should be duly registered. Total autonomy was essential, along with permission to start new courses of study and flexibility in getting more than one degree simultaneously. For specialised courses, the horizontal mobility of students during the course of study would be very helpful. Close interaction with neighbouring industries and reputed institutions was very welcome. When drawing up recommendations for college managements, the participants highlighted the need for inter-disciplinary programmes and courses that had greater vocational content. To encourage meritorious students, there ought to be scholarships and incentives.
