VISAKHAPATNAM, MARCH 22. The East Coast Railway Shramik Union, affiliated to the All-India Railwaymen's Federation (AIRF), has described the verdict of the Supreme Court setting aside the decision of the Railway Board to accord recognition to a third trade union, as a good augury for the working class in the railways. In a statement here on Monday, the ECoRSU general secretary, Ch. Gandhi, recalled that the AIRF had in the past seriously objected to the entry of a third trade union in the organisation.
The union leader revealed that the Railway Board had, in June 2002, accorded permission to a trade union upon which the Southern Railway Mazdoor Union, affiliated to the AIRF, had approached the Tamil Nadu High Court which had granted a `stay', and later observed that recognition to a new union should not be given without verification through `check-off' system or secret ballot.
