Councillor's son among two arrested for murder

By Our Staff Reporter

NEW DELHI, MARCH 22. Two persons, including the son of a municipal councillor, have been arrested in connection with the murder of a 40-year-old builder at Darya Ganj in Central Delhi on February 25. The accused had allegedly been given over Rs. 2 lakhs to carry out the killing.

According to the police, the first arrest in the case was made on March 20 when a police team arrested Akil, a resident of Lal Kuan in Central Delhi, following a tip-off. A country-made revolver and Rs. 1.18 lakhs were recovered from his possession. At his instance, the second accused, Sayyed Abrar, a resident of Kucha Chelan in Darya Ganj, was also arrested. The police claim to have recovered Rs. 88,000 from the accused.

During interrogation, the accused allegedly confessed to having killed Yogesh Sharma, a resident of Gali Kale Khan at Chandni Mahal in Darya Ganj.

The Deputy Commissioner of Police (Central), Madan Mohan Oberoi, said the accused were given Rs. 2.1 lakhs, of which Rs. 2.06 lakhs has been recovered. However, it was not yet clear who gave them the money. Mr. Oberoi said the police were investigating the role of some persons whose names cropped up during investigations. Meanwhile, the two accused have been remanded to three-day police custody.

On February 25, Yogesh was going on foot to work when around 11-15 a.m. when somebody shot him from the back from a close range near Gali Nanhe Khan. Yogesh collapsed and was then shot in his abdomen. He died on the spot. Area residents noticed a young man in helmet fleeing after firing the shots. He then sat on a motorcycle waiting for him in a nearby lane of Kucha Dakhni Rai and fled.

Interrogation revealed that Akil had fired the shots, while Abrar was driving the motorcycle. Abrar, son of a municipal councillor from Janata Dal (Secular), had agreed to drive the motorcycle after being promised Rs. 90,000.

The police are yet to ascertain the exact reason behind the murder. However, it is believed that Yogesh may have had some dispute with some other builder, which led to the incident. The deceased himself had been involved in criminal incidents including the murder of another builder, Pramod Tiwari, of Chandni Chowk in 1996. He was arrested along with two other accused in the case but was acquitted. Yogesh too was active in Chandni Chowk. Even earlier, he was involved in an attempt to murder case in 1992 and another criminal case in 1986. While one of his brothers runs a guest house in Nabi Karim and is also a local political activist, the other is a jeweller.

Further investigations are now on to trace the person who had given the money to the accused and also the person who hatched the entire conspiracy.
